In the £4.99 Primark garment, Barry Delaney didn’t give a second thought to what others might think of his outfit. All that mattered was the agreement he and his best friend Kevin Elliott had made.
They had promised three years prior that if Elliott was killed in battle, Delaney would wear a frock – the brighter, the better. Private Elliott was killed by a Taliban attack in Afghanistan this month, bringing an end to their unorthodox agreement.
Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Delaney rushed out of the house in an ill-fitting lime green minidress and 99 pink knee high socks. The 25-year-old then poured a neat vodka – his and Elliot’s favourite drink – while avoiding the mirror with all his might.
Delaney, 25, drank from a pink sofa on the 10th floor of a tower block on the outskirts of Dundee for an hour before getting up and leaving. During Elliott’s two-week leave from his tour of duty in Helmand province, the two pals sat and talked about their experiences.
There were several booby traps in Afghanistan and a formidable opponent that seemed to get more dangerous by the week, so Elliott had expressed his fear to his comrade, a Black Watch infantryman. Returning to Helmand, the 24-year-old guy feared, would be the end of him.
Despite having scavenged several part-time labour jobs, Delaney had found it more difficult to secure full-time employment in the city, where unemployment was rife.

The blare of a car horn from the parking lot 120 feet below interrupted his thoughts on Wednesday. On the way to the burial, Jonathan Wells arrived in his Vauxhall Vectra with Delaney in the backseat.
Wells made no mention of Delaney’s odd attire during the two-mile drive to St Mary’s Church in Dundee’s centre.
