Luria was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on August 15, 1975.In 1906, the family of Michelle’s mother moved to Jasper, Alabama.
Walker County, Alabama coal workers purchased things from the family.During the early 1900s, Luria’s great-grandfather helped to found a Reform Jewish congregation in Jasper, and her immediate family joined Birmingham’s Temple Emanu-El at the same time.
In addition to the National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, and the Birmingham Jewish Federation, Luria’s mother served as president of Hadassah.
Elaine Luria is a member of the House of Representatives from Virginia’s 2nd District. Rep. Luria served in the Navy for two decades before being elected in 2018.
She retired with the rank of Commander. Her Navy career culminated in commanding an operational squadron of 400 sailors while stationed in the Middle East and the Western Pacific as a nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer.

After high school, Elaine felt motivated to join the Navy so she could give back and contribute to a more secure, more robust, and more equitable society for herself and the next generation.

On six deployments, Elaine served as a Surface Warfare Officer and nuclear engineer, performing operations in the Middle East and Western Pacific on destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers. She was twice forward-deployed to ships stationed in Japan.

In December 2019, Luria joined all but three House Democrats in voting to impeach Trump on both counts of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress; all House Republicans voted against both accusations.
During the partial closure of the federal government, Luria stated that she had requested that her income be withheld until January 2019.
She was a member of a bipartisan group of lawmakers attempting to find a solution to the government shutdown.Luria is in support of enacting red flag regulations and requiring all gun buyers to undergo background checks.
When Luria introduced the Veterans’ Compensation Cost of Living Adjustment Act in February 2019, he raised the COLAs given to veterans who have served their country in the war on terrorism.
