Walker County, Alabama coal workers purchased things from the family.During the early 1900s, Luria’s great-grandfather helped to found a Reform Jewish congregation in Jasper, and her immediate family joined Birmingham’s Temple Emanu-El at the same time.

In addition to the National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, and the Birmingham Jewish Federation, Luria’s mother served as president of Hadassah.

Elaine Luria is a member of the House of Representatives from Virginia’s 2nd District. Rep. Luria served in the Navy for two decades before being elected in 2018.

She retired with the rank of Commander. Her Navy career culminated in commanding an operational squadron of 400 sailors while stationed in the Middle East and the Western Pacific as a nuclear-trained Surface Warfare Officer.
