“Private initiatives, for the public good, with a focus on quality of life” is the definition of philanthropy, which is a kind of the altruistic behaviour known as “altruism.”

Philanthropy stands in contrast to both business endeavours, which are private initiatives for private good and are primarily focused on monetary gain.

and government endeavours, which are public initiatives for public good and are primarily focused on the provision of public services. Both of these types of endeavours are examples of public good. One who engages in acts of charitable giving is known as a philanthropist.

The word “philanthropy” originates from the Ancient Greek phrase “love of humanity,” which is composed of the elements phil-, meaning “love” or “fond of,” and anthrpos, meaning “humankind” or “mankind.”

Plutarch, a Greek historian who lived in the second century AD, popularised the concept of philanthropa, which means “love for humanity,” in his writings.

During the Middle Ages in Roman Catholicism, philanthropy was replaced by caritas, which is translated as “charity” and means “selfless love.”

Caritas was valued for salvation and escape from purgatory. Sir Francis Bacon, who lived in the 1600s, is credited with modernising the practise of philanthropy.

He is also given credit for preventing horticulture from claiming ownership of the word. Bacon regarded philanthropy to be equivalent with “goodness,” which is in line with the Aristotelian idea of virtue.

which defines it as deliberately ingrained patterns of ethical behaviour. Samuel Johnson provided a straightforward definition of philanthropy, which he referred to as “love of mankind; good nature.” This term is still in use today and is frequently referred to in a manner that is more gender neutral as the “love of humanity.”
