Carleton Varney Obituary | Carleton Varney was a well-known interior designer, and he spent most of his career working at the Greenbrier resort. The resort has reported that Varney has passed away. He had reached the age of 85.
According to the hotel, Varney passed away on Thursday morning while staying at the resort. The Greenbrier stated in a news release that the native of Massachusetts had a long-standing association with the resort that dated back more than 60 years.

Varney continued Draper’s use of vivid colors, floral patterns, and startling contrasts at The Greenbrier after buying his business in 1964. Draper was known for his use of these design elements. In addition, he was responsible for the interior design of the Governor’s Mansion in Charleston and the Vice Presidential Mansion in Washington, DC during the administration of George H.W. Bush.
Varney is the author of a number of other novels in addition to “Kiss the Hibiscus Good Night,” “The Decorator,” and “In The Pink – Dorothy Draper, America’s Most Fabulous Decorator.” Varney’s book, which is titled “Mr. Color — The Greenbrier & Other Decorating Adventures,” is given the name “Mr. Color” as a result of his transition into the character Mr. Color.

Varney was conferred a Master of Arts degree from New York University in addition to obtaining an honorary doctorate from the University of Charleston in West Virginia.
